Youth on the Move educates people on first aid. Most people offer first aid that can be damaging to individuals as more misconceptions are held about epilepsy and first aid. To help reduce the burden of the person having a seizure , here is what you need to do
- Stay calm
- Move the person away from danger and remove any sharp or harmful objects around the person
- Support or place something soft beneath the head
- Loosen any tight clothing at the neck
- Put the person on recovery position(on their side) when jerking stops to let excess saliva come out
- Stay with the person until fully recovered and oriented
- Seek medical help if the seizure takes longer than 5minutes
The don’ts
- Do not restrain the person when they are jerking
- Do not put anything into their mouth. It is not possible to prevent person from biting as by the time of first aid the biting has happened
- Do not give food or drinks before the person is fully recovered from the seizure
